Camp Eco.Logic

Inspiring and preparing students to engage in the environmental movement

April 9, 2021 - Eco.Logic, an environmental education non-profit, is launching its first ever virtual Camp Eco.Logic on Earth Day, April 22. At Camp Eco.Logic, middle and high schoolers are offered the space to deepen their knowledge of environmental issues as they learn about climate solutions and opportunities to take action.

Camp Eco.Logic helps address the lack of climate education in the United States. Climate change is included on the curriculum of just 36 states and the District of Columbia. According to a 2016 survey, teachers who do teach about climate spend a median of 1.5 hours on the topic in an entire school year -- an amount that is inadequate for the scale of the climate challenge. Teachers have cited a lack of knowledge, lack of materials, that it’s too political, and that it’s not allowed to be taught as some reasons for not teaching climate change. Meanwhile, the amount of carbon in our atmosphere has hit a record high, and 2020 was tied as the hottest year on record. What’s apparent is that we need to educate students about the climate crisis in ways that are holistic, intersectional, and meaningful. Camp Eco.Logic aims to do just that.

“I am interested in joining Camp Eco.Logic particularly to meet environmental leaders of climate science, environmental justice, advocacy, and climate communications,” says Ava, an enrolled twelfth grade participant who is also the founder of an interdisciplinary environmental magazine. “I’m excited to be inspired by the myriad of environmental career opportunities.”

Young people have been pivotal in the climate movement, and Camp Eco.Logic seeks to equip our participants to learn more about how they can join the movement. Our activities are uniquely designed with young people in mind; for instance, one session focuses on leveraging social media to amplify a message. Because Camp Eco.Logic will be held virtually, campers from all over North America will have the opportunity to meet and interact with environmental experts and make friends with fellow earth-loving peers.

A central component of Camp Eco.Logic is the environmental leaders who join sessions to engage in dialogues with students. Speakers come from diverse backgrounds, and this year’s speakers are: Dr. Rachel Licker, Sareya Taylor, Shannon Seigal, Chance Thompson, Kristy Drutman, Erika Symmonds, Albert Arevalo, Sanjana Sekhar, and Rozina Kanchwala. These environmental leaders will speak about their work on climate science, climate justice, civic engagement, sustainable food systems, environmental art, climate communications, representation in the outdoors, and green jobs. Our counselors, Reyna Askew and Kashaf Momin, also environmentalists, will help facilitate small group activities for campers.

“I’m excited to join Camp Eco.Logic so I can support participants as they move from awareness to action. The interrelated global issues of this generation need all of us working together to solve them, and no one is too young to take action!” said Kashaf Momin, the counselor that will work with the high school participants.

At Eco.Logic, we strive to build community in all of our programming because we recognize that climate change can be overwhelming and that it is often through a community that we can stay committed to addressing the climate crisis. We believe that this camp can create lifelong connections for the participants.

Registration for Camp Eco.Logic is still open for middle and high school students who are interested  in learning more about how they can meaningfully engage in the environmental movement. Camp kicks off on Earth Day (April 22), meets on Thursday evenings for six weeks, and will end on May 27. Students will receive a digital badge following the completion of the camp.
