Love in the Time of Climate Change

Modern dating meets climate anxiety in new comedy podcast series

Feb. 26, 2021— Rozina Kanchwala, writer and producer of the theatrical performance Love in the Time of Climate Change, has adapted her play into a podcast series released today. The podcast is a timely and quirky comedy that follows a young woman’s adventures through modern dating and climate anxiety, and explores the struggles of finding “your forever,” deciding whether or not to have children, and how to make a difference in a world gripped by climate chaos amid a pandemic.

This eight-episode series dives into the life of Ayla, an environmentally conscious activist, forever single, and frustrated with the state of the world -- a story that is relatable to many single millennials. She grapples with the impending doom of the world while juggling her day-to-day concerns, while compulsively checking her phone.

“This project started off as a creative outlet for me dealing with all things ranging from climate depression to the woes of modern dating,” says Rozina Kanchwala, writer and producer of the play and podcast series.  “What transpired was a creative platform to have very serious conversations in a humorous and accessible way.”

The podcast series also dives into other timely issues, such as immigration struggles and the intersection of climate and migration. Marisol, a character from El Salvador, grapples with her undocumented immigration status while adjusting to life in the U.S. without her family. “In many cases, migration is a survival mechanism,” said Nayeli Pelayo, who performs the role of Marisol. “Climate change is one of many factors displacing families from their homes, but regardless of a person’s reason for coming to this country, our system needs reform and this play highlights a personal story of the traumatic effects of family separation.”

The theatrical play Love in the Time of Climate Change covered similarly expansive subject matter, using lightness and humor in its 55-minute run time. The podcast series is able to dive deeper into the salient themes and topics in the play, with each 30-minute episode beginning with a scene from the play followed by an exploration into the complex ideas explored in the scene. Guests include Isaias Hernandez, Lauren Farwell, Kristy Drutman, Julian Brave NoiseCat, Julia Pyper, Keya Chatterjee, and Tykee James who share their insights on climate activism, communicating effectively on climate change, holding corporations accountable, and the decision to have children in this age.

The podcast series is available on all streaming podcast platforms, including Spotify, iTunes, and Google Podcasts. Tune in for a captivating story full of heart, humor, and even some climate education. The podcast series is sponsored by Dylan Green and Political Climate
